Reuters reported that Nokia will sign a contract with world’s largest carrier, China Mobile on November 19, 2008. The contract will suggest Nokia to supply dual band handsets next year that can be compatible with both GSM and China’s homegrown 3G technology, TD-SCDMA.
To date, Nokia still doesn’t have any TD-SCDMA based handsets. However, the Finnish firm is suspected to has access to the technical expertise of this technology standard since it holds 49% shares in Nokia-Potevio join venture. Potevio or formerly known as China Putian Corp is the company that has become major supplier of equipment to China Mobile’s TD-SCDMA trial networks in Tianjin and Qinhuangdao.
Nokia, which could sell about 70 million mobile phones in China during 2007, is the largest mobile manufacturer in this country with 42% market share. While China Mobile itself is also the largest carrier in Greater China that has about 70% market share.
